At GDC San Francisco, strategy publisher Kalypso premiered the PS4 version of Sudden Strike 4, the return of the beloved World War 2 real time tactics series. Producer Christian Schlütter introduced us to two missions: The Siege of Leningrad, the beginning of the soviet campaign, takes place on a frozen lake that the Soviets used to ship supplies into the besieged city while being battered by German attacks. Fittingly, it is the players job to hold the line for the supply trucks while shooting away the ice below the German tanks and soldiers and keeping his own units “off the ice” so to speak. The second mission, taken from the allied campaign and titled “The Battle of the Hedgerows” saw American soldiers plowing through the fields of the French countryside to drive the Germans out.
Throughout the presentation, we got a glimpse not only of the tactical depth of the title (no base building, flanking and other maneuvers are important, tank rushing will not get you very far here) but also of the unique PS4 control schemes with which Hungarian developer Kite Games (of Codename: Panzers fame) attempts to bring the first hardcore real time tactics game to a console. A circular menu for special skills, quick select buttons for unit stances and clever grouping and scrolling mechanics will be combined with an optional pause mode to make Sudden Strike 4 a rewarding experience for all couch strategists when it hits store shelves later this year.
